NEW DIRECTIONS HONORS ITS FAMILY OF HEROES

Los Angeles, CA – On Sunday, November 8, 2009, New Directions will pay tribute to veterans who have successfully reclaimed their lives during Honoring Our Heroes, a gala dinner to be held at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. The event will raise funds for New Directions' comprehensive treatment programs, which assist veterans in overcoming hardships and reintegrating into society.

Actor Joe Mantegna will host the fete, which includes a cocktail reception, a silent auction and musical performances from the Eli Brueggemann Trio and from the New Directions Choir, a nationally recognized a capella group made up of formerly homeless veterans.

Congressman Bob Filner, who represents California’s 51 District, will be the evening’s keynote speaker.  As Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Filner has worked tirelessly to promote legislation that ensures mental health care, education and other benefits to U.S. military veterans.

Operating five residential facilities in West Los Angeles, New Directions has aided thousands of veterans since it opened its doors in 1992.  The agency provides housing, counseling, substance abuse treatment, vocational training and a multitude of other support services that enables veterans to transform their lives and reunite with their families.

As well as saluting successful veterans during the dinner, New Directions also will honor Union Bank of California, one of the first corporate contributors to the agency.

More than 150,000 veterans are expected to return to California after serving in the Middle East.  Many of these men and women face serious physical and mental health issues, and will need assistance as they reintegrate into civilian life.  New Directions operates the first and only transitional home in the nation for troops returning from combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.
